Everyone needs a legacy plan. It’s like carrying an umbrella on an overcast day. Have you ever noticed that if you carry the umbrella, it won’t rain?  But forget your umbrella . . . deluge!  Every time.

But the reality is that your life leaves a legacy, intended or not.  What you need to ask yourself is: “Is this the legacy I want to leave?”

• Do my values and goals match my philanthropy?

Legacy is a powerful word. It can be an inheritance of property or money, but it also defines the values you live by and the memories you leave behind.  Legacies are typically thought of as positive, but they can be negative, too.  They can be gifts or burdens placed upon us by those we left behind.  If you inherit a burden, how do you avoid passing that burden on?  How do you leave a gift?
